A directory worth
coming back to.
A useful directory starts with an editorial decision: who is this for, and what can they find here that is difficult to find elsewhere?
Choose an audience before a category
“Tools” is a category. “Tools for solo documentary filmmakers” gives you an audience, a vocabulary, and a practical reason for someone to visit. Start narrow enough that you can personally judge whether a submission belongs.
Make the first listings useful
Write original descriptions. Explain who each entry is for, what makes it different, and any limitations you have actually verified. Include a working website link. A small set of well-researched entries is a better starting point than hundreds of empty listings.
Build the participation loop
Give visitors a way to contribute and explain what happens next. In Launchboard, signed-in members submit entries for approval. You review them in WordPress before publishing. Votes help members express interest; comments let them add context.
Set clear editorial rules
Decide whether self-promotion is welcome, which categories fit, and how you will handle duplicates. Publish those rules on your own site before opening public submissions. Use WordPress comment moderation and review new listings regularly.
Own the experience
The Launchboard theme handles presentation. The companion plugin stores listings and voting data in your WordPress database. You can change the theme without deleting the directory’s content. Export your data and back up your database as part of normal site maintenance.
Start with the smallest real version
Install the free Launchboard alpha on staging. Add your first entries and invite a few people from your audience to use it. Watch what they search for and ask what was missing. Use that evidence to decide what to build next.
