How to keep your WordPress blog free from Clutter
Blogging. Using WordPress to Blog. It’s moved on massively since Mike Little co-founded WordPress (after the popular cafe log software was stopped).
In 2016, WordPress powers over 25% of the internet. It’s grown from being a simple blogging platform, to being a fully fledged content management solution. There’s now almost 50,000 WordPress plugins available (and that’s just on WordPress.org)
Not to mention all the plugins on places like CodeCanyon. With all that choice. It’s really easy for your WordPress blog to get full of clutter.
If you’re writing a blog to help grow your business then you want the following features;
- You want your website to load quickly for your visitors
- You want your content to stand out
- You want it to be really easy for people to share your content (and get more visits)
So great. You have a website. Your website is your online presence for your business. Let’s use a teaching business as an example
- You have a great homepage with key information for your teaching courses
- You have an appointment plugin activated on your site. People use this to book 1-2-1 time slots with you
- You have a contact form plugin activated so people can easily message you
- Not to mention extra plugins for social sharing
It’s great. Your site is great. Your theme is good. But is it good for your blogging? In contrast to your main website your blog should focus on making content easy to share. It should be easy for people to read.
Your blog doesn’t need to be on your main site
You can install your blog in a sub-folder of your main site. In your hosting file manager you could do the following
- Create a sub-folder called /blog/
- Install a new WordPress into that directory
- Choose a blogging theme – our Epic Blogger Theme is great for blogging
- Start blogging on your new install of WordPress. Which is clutter free from all your plugins
Why being clutter free matters?
If you use the blog capability of your main website this brings clutter. Remember all those plugins we listed above? They’re all loaded in the header of your website. Having a clutter free blog website (in addition to your main site) means your content will load quicker.
It will mean you won’t confuse your visitors with too much going on. Great.
Through running your blog on it’s own WordPress install you’ll be able to focus on your content. There’s added benefits of having a clutter free blog
- You can expand your content marketing team without giving them access to all your website
- You can add editors and authors who can focus on writing content 🙂
- You can speed up your site by only running the plugins you need
